London: Printed for W. Strahan, J. F. and C. Rivington, A. Hamilton, et al. 1781 Hardcover tall folio, 17 x 10.5 inches. Title page indicates that the book was bound into four volumes, though also labels this "Volume the Fifth", with "fifth" pasted on (original). Rebound in full navy cloth with leather spine label. Replete with engraved illustrations of anatomy, geology, geometry, ornithology, architecture, etc. Plate volume only, rebound with contents beginning at the title page. Binding in fine condition, contents very good with an occasional touch of foxing, though the plates remain bright and sharp. Title page has a 4 inch closed tear at the foredge, easily repaired. Some wear to the edges of the last few pages, mostly bumping to the upper corner. Contents overall very nice with plates clean and unmarked. Cyclopaedia: or, An Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences was an encyclopedia published by Ephraim Chambers in London in 1728, and reprinted in numerous editions throughout the eighteenth century. The Cyclopaedia was one of the first general encyclopedias to be produced in English. Very Good.
