Selling Your Books / Appraisals

1. Selling Books

Caliban Book Shop buys books, autographs, photographs, printed material, and original art.  We purchase anything from single items to entire libraries, contemporary releases as well as rare items.

Interested in selling?  We make free house visits in an extremely wide radius around the Pittsburgh area (we're talking thousands of hectares). We pay generously and remove promptly.  We also purchase items brought into our shop during business hours (please call ahead if you are bringing in items to ensure a buyer is present).

Subjects we like: Fine and Modern Art -- Photography -- Architecture and Design -- Old Children's and Illustrated -- Poetry -- Philosophy -- Cultural Studies -- Classic Fiction -- Underground Press -- Beats/Counterculture -- Music -- Gastronomy / Cookbooks -- General Scholarly -- Americana -- Local History

Things we are NOT interested in: Out of Date Textbooks -- Bestsellers -- Romances -- Book Club Editions -- Reference -- Business -- How-To's

2. Appraisals

Co-owner John Schulman is a seasoned appraiser for estate, legal, tax and insurance purposes. We work closely with a number of honest antique dealers, auctioneers, and estate sale professionals; we also consult with a number of libraries in the area and can facilitate the donation of unwanted books.

Caliban Book Shop is a member of the ABAA (Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America), the main professional organization of book dealers and appraisers specializing in rare books, etc.  Mr. Schulman has spent several years appraising for PBS's Antiques Roadshow, most recently in Atlanta (Summer, 2011). He also organizes the Discovery Day appraisals for the ABAA-sponsored antiquarian book fairs in Boston and New York City.

If you have an item that you need appraised for tax, estate or personal reasons, please call us to set up an appointment (412-681-9111). Verbal appraisals are free; written appraisals carry a fee. We're also happy to render opinions on books via e-mail with photo attachments. However, we will not attempt appraisals over the phone without seeing the item.

3. Gift Suggestions and Collection Development

Our knowledgeable staff is well-suited for helping you pick out a book or other unique item for a gift. A rare book makes a great gift for a birthday, anniversary, wedding, graduation, commencement, bar-mitzvah, bris or retirement.

Our shop is also a great resource for individuals, businesses, libraries and other institutions looking to add to their collections.

Please send us an email or give us a call and we can work with you to find a new treasure or a beautiful edition of an older book.
